Last train home
We leave something of ourselves behind when we leave a place. We stay there even though we go away. And there are things in us we can find again by going back there. We travel to ourselves when we go to a place that we have covered as a stretch of our life, no matter how brief it has been."
This passage from Night Train to Lisbon by Pascal Mercier has always resonated deeply with me. The novel, which inspired the film of the same name, explores memory, identity, and the journey of self-discovery through the story of a Swiss professor, played by Jeremy Irons, who becomes obsessed with the writings of a mysterious Portuguese doctor. This doctor, though absent from the film, leaves behind a book filled with profound reflections on life—words that echo long after they are read.
It was this lingering presence, the idea that we leave traces of ourselves behind in the places we touch, that inspired Last Train Home. These four pieces were composed as if they were the film’s lost soundtrack, capturing the emotions and atmosphere of a journey—both physical and internal.
This project became a true labor of love, spanning nearly eight years until it felt complete. Now, I leave it here for you to experience. I hope you enjoy it as much as I did creating it.
